Walking Through the Night

Thankful

that’s what they say

I should be

as I walk

but what about the sister

who won’t speak

what about the child

sentenced to a cancer ward

and the question

is God fair

that crosses

my mind

like the cloud

passing over the moon

can I be thankful for the lack of flavor

in this world of cheap food

and cheaper talk

if it means I have a chance to be the salt

as I walk

it is easier

far easier

to fill our lives with the trivial

babble

and clatter

of things

that distract us from the reality

of where we are

but that don’t really matter

what is there to be thankful for

in this world blackened by chaos

can I be thankful for the darkness

if this dark prairie is the perfect place

to shine a light

from the highest hill

(Some friends in Denmark just released a new music video. Check it out.)
