The cardboard box was free

to crawl into

the instructions were there on the side

all I needed to do was obey them

and make fun of those who just wouldn’t

fit into the place they are given

it is obvious

only the stupid would resist

this paradise of humans

on humans

going nowhere

and doing nothing but stinking

but with all that mass of bodies and sweat

jammed into such a crowded space

I still felt like going somewhere else

somewhere I could think on my own

without somebody else’s toe being shoved up my nose

or foot wiggling in my mouth

like a flopping trout

I’d rather not eat

there is just something about being out here on the wide open plain

even if it is dangerous on my own

without a television

to tell me what to be afraid of

I’d rather live dangerously

than to be crammed with everybody

into that soggy box of safety

laying in the corner

of garbage alley
