Off Road

We used to see the lights

through the windshield

so clearly

but now we just say that we can see

so much clearer than before

as the rain washes over the window

we used to search for answers

like they are something worth knowing

and ushering it into our lives

but now we are so much smarter

that we don’t ask any questions at all

as the night collapses over our vision

we used to live at peace with our passengers

and even allowed love

to prevent us from riding alone

but now we have matured so much

that we never look beyond ourselves

we used to be content

to drive the narrow road

that led to the place we wanted to go

but now we have spiralled into the ditch

and we celebrate that we have found ourselves

and we are where we’ve always

wanted to be
