Backstage Stories: The Politics of Acting

  • I said many, there are always exceptions to this of course, many other people enjoy being treated with contempt but that is a subject for another day. The point here is, know who your audience is and respect your audience. If you don’t appreciate them, somebody else will.
  • The script may actually be garbage but then again, maybe the script writer is smarter and more experienced than you are. (The raft of Pulitzer prizes on their desk may have been earned honestly, one never knows.)
  • The director may be crazy but then again, he may be crazy like a fox. (The village of Oscars on his desk may have been earned honestly, one never knows that either.)
  • The crew may be good, but aren’t nearly as good as you are with two community theater productions under your belt, so you can treat them crew people like the scum they are. Then again, unless you are a pretty big star, the producer can replace you and the show will go on without you, but the show can’t go on without a good crew doing the heavy lifting. (That is one thing we do know.)
