A Story of Redemption

And God looked down from a place of perfection

on the world of chaos and war

the total sum of human achievement

and God decided

that’s where I’ll send my Son

is there love in this ancient story

of a Jesus

crucified by both the left and the right

the religious

and the self-righteous

is there love in this picture

of someone beaten down

by the same sort of system that says it will save us

while shoving our faces into the mud

is it true that the powerful

and the poor

are all headed toward the same fate

in the end

is there grace in the story of resurrection

that God himself was whipped by the worst of human nature

but showed us that even death can be broken

in the dawn of Easter morning

do we have a candle burning

is there hope

in knowing that the gold of salvation

can flow from the furnace of suffering

is there peace

in surrender

to a power greater than the world

is there a relationship to be gained

in taking the outstretched hand

of someone who has felt the same pain

that we are feeling

do we have a candle burning deep within

a spirit fire

eating away at the edges of the night
